The assessment process

In order to achieve this accreditation, your hotel is required to complete a self-assessment form. All hotels can conduct a trial assessment without charge to see if they make the grade required. We supply the assessment document and also the guide which identifies the minimum mandatory requirements before we confirm the outcome.

Large hotels are required to fulfil a wide range of criteria as part of the assessment. Small or boutique hotels with a lower number of guest rooms and suites also have the opportunity to obtain an International five star. The number of mandatory requirements from the public areas of the hotel are reduced but we still expect the quality of service and guest rooms to be of the highest standards.

If you also want to enter the hotel for an International Hotel Award, we sometimes require extra information for our panel’s scrutiny.

As we are looking for a small number of very best hotels from each country, every aspect of your hotel will be taken into consideration including service, facilities, interior design and safety. The questions require your detailed and complete responses in order to be assessed accurately. It is a condition of participation that your hotel must be willing to accept spot checks in order that our assessors can verify the information supplied. We do not mystery shop hotels by secret inspection as we need access to inspect areas of the hotel that might not be available to guests.

Once we have received the completed assessment form, we check your documents to enable us to confirm acceptance and present the we present all successful candidates with their International Five Star accreditation. We send a welcome pack containing everything you need to get the best out of your new status.

How is my hotel assessed?

We supply management with the assessment document and also the guide which identifies the minimum mandatory requirements before we confirm the outcome. Once you are confident that your hotel will achieve the score required to achieve the International Five Star standard, you must send your completed form to our team for official review and verification.

Will an inspector visit my hotel?

Your hotel must be willing to accept a spot check by one of the judges and provide two nights accommodation and food without charge. We will undertake a random number of spot checks for quality control purposes, but not every hotel or application will be inspected or visited. Your will receive an official notification should we plan to visit your hotel for inspection.

Can any size/style of hotel enter?

There are no restrictions to the size or style of hotel which may apply.

Once I have achieved the five star standard for how long can I keep it?

The International Five Star Hotel accreditation is valid for one year to ensure that the exceptionally high standards are upheld.

How much does it cost to apply for the International Five Star Hotel Standard?

You can conduct a trial assessment without charge, our detailed assessment forms outline all of the minimum required scores. If you achieve the grading required and wish to formally apply for the International Five Star Hotel accreditation, the standard fee is £1200 GBP (+ VAT where applicable).

What happens if my application is unsuccessful?

If necessary, we will explain where you have failed to meet the minimum required criteria, quite often these matters are minor and can be addressed with minimal time and cost. We allow any applying hotel to re-apply once any shortcomings are resolved.

What happens if/when I am successful in achieving the Standard?

Our team will notify you once your are successful, and you can begin using the membership logo with immediate effect.

Does The International Five Star Hotel Standard automatically guarantee me an International Hotel Award?

No, those who achieve The International Five Star Hotel Standard are eligible to apply to enter the International Hotel Awards.

I have previously achieved an International Hotel Award. Am I automatically given an International Five Star Hotel accreditation?

No. The International Five Star Hotel Standard was introduced in response to requests for a globally-recognised and consistent five star standard that travellers can trust wherever they are located. Additionally, only those hotels that achieve The International Five Star Hotel Standard will be eligible to apply to enter the next International Hotel Awards.
